Removing Barriers to Employment: Internet & Computer Access

When people talk about finding a job, the advice usually starts with things like writing a resume, practicing interview questions, or networking. For many people, the barriers begin long before that. Not everyone has reliable internet, a computer, transportation, professional clothing, or even a quiet place to complete an application. These challenges often go unnoticed, yet they can make finding employment feel nearly impossible.

That's why I created the Removing Barriers to Employment series, because I believe everyone deserves a fair opportunity to find meaningful employment, regardless of where they're starting. My goal is to share free and low-cost resources that can help make the job search a little more accessible for anyone facing barriers along the way. No one should have to miss out on an opportunity because they didn't have access to the tools they needed. In this first post, we're starting with one of the most important barriers to overcome: internet and computer access.

If internet or computer access has become a barrier in your job search, here are a few resources that may be able to help:

Public Libraries

Your local library can be one of the most valuable free resources during your job search. Many libraries offer much more than books, including technology and career resources that are available at little to no cost.

Many libraries offer:

• Free Wi-Fi

• Public computers

• Printing and copying services (sometimes free or low-cost)

• Resume and job search assistance

• Quiet spaces for virtual interviews

• Access to online learning platforms

EveryoneOn

EveryoneOn is a nonprofit organization that helps individuals and families find affordable internet service, low-cost computers, and digital literacy resources based on their ZIP code.

They can help you find:

• Affordable home internet plans

• Discounted computers

• Local technology programs

• Digital skills resources

Visit EveryoneOn's website and enter your ZIP code to see what programs are available in your area!

Human-I-T

Human-I-T is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making technology more accessible. They provide refurbished computers, affordable internet options, and digital skills training to help bridge the digital divide.

They may offer:

• Low-cost refurbished laptops and desktops

• Affordable internet options

• Technology support

• Digital literacy resources

Check Human-I-T's website to learn about current programs and eligibility requirements.

Internet Provider Assistance Programs

Many internet service providers offer discounted internet plans for eligible households. Qualifications vary, but programs are often available for people participating in government assistance programs or meeting income requirements.

Check with your provider to see if they offer:

• Discounted monthly internet plans

• Reduced installation fees

• Low-cost equipment options

If you're unsure, simply search your provider's name followed by "low-income internet program" or contact their customer service department.

Every step forward matters, even if that first step is simply finding a place to get online. Don't be discouraged if you're starting your job search with limited resources. There are organizations and programs designed to help, and asking for support is a sign of determination, not weakness.
